Bibles for Nigeria

Bible

What we do

This year we have sent over 50 boxes of reconditioned Bibles, commentaries, and books on Christian living to Africa with 42 going to Nigeria. As well, we have assisted with the purchase of Bibles within Nigeria at very reduced prices.
The books going to Northern Nigeria replace those destroyed when Muslims burn churches and homes, while those going to the south are for churches making significant conversions amongst the population who follow Islam or folk religions.
Second hand books are cleaned and covered on Saturday afternoons by a very faithful and conscientious group whose numbers vary between 5 and 9. We meet for about 2 hours, usually 3 times per school term. A seasonal afternoon tea is provided.
Some members cover books at home to assist, as this is a ‘come when you can’ ministry.

Persecution

Across many parts of Africa today, Christians face intense persecution because of their faith. In nations such as Nigeria, Sudan, Somalia, and parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo, believers are often targeted by extremist groups, hostile governments, or even their own communities. Churches are burned, villages attacked, and people kidnapped or killed simply because they choose to follow Jesus. Despite this suffering, the Christian community across the continent continues to grow and demonstrate remarkable courage, forgiveness, and hope. Their resilience is deeply rooted in their trust in God and in the promises of Scripture.

Why it’s important

For many African Christians, the Bible is far more than a religious text—it is their lifeline. In regions where poverty, violence, and instability are daily realities, the words of the Bible offer strength, purpose, and the assurance that God has not abandoned them. Verses such as “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want” (Psalm 23:1) and “Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness” (Matthew 5:10) remind them that suffering is not meaningless, and that their faith has eternal value. The Bible becomes a source of courage that empowers believers to stand firm in the face of threats and even death.

In many African communities, Christian faith is also central to identity and hope for the future. The Bible’s message of justice, forgiveness, and reconciliation offers a foundation for healing from generations of tribal conflict, colonial oppression, and ongoing violence. It teaches the dignity of every person as made in God’s image and calls believers to love their enemies and seek peace. In this way, the Bible not only sustains individuals under persecution but also inspires movements of compassion, education, and social change.

The Living Word

Even in the most dangerous circumstances, persecuted Christians gather secretly to read Scripture, pray, and worship together. Their faith in God’s Word unites them and gives them the courage to forgive those who harm them. For them, the Bible is not an abstract philosophy—it is the living Word of God that speaks directly into their struggles and gives them hope beyond their suffering. The persecution of Christians in Africa, though tragic, also reveals the unshakable power of the gospel and the profound importance of the Bible as a source of comfort, strength, and life in the midst of darkness.
